Project Brief

Disney Clothing Co. contacts you to design a brand new illustration for the upcoming 20th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith. They want it to be a design that is about medium sized and can be placed promptly on the back of a sweater and t-shirt. The design should be of the main character Anakin Skywalker and depict his struggles that ultimately turn him to the dark side. The typography must include the quote “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering”. Use a bold font that matches what is commonly seen in Star Wars.

Deadline: 5 Days

I make an effort to research all that I need to know before going into any project. Being a movie I am well familiar with, I just had to do a wide search on what has been already done and visualize what I can do differently with this project. I gathered these images to blend into one cohesive illustration. I also gathered images of the fonts that are most prevalent in these films.

This one seems to do just fine!

Next, I shift my focus on the other half of Anakin Skywalker. The darker half.

The design is freehand (or free cursor) and was completed by referencing the different shapes and features of Darth Vader’s helmet.

The symbols are comprised of a mixture of basic geometric shapes and make up the different halves of the republic and imperial cogs.

Clothing Apparel Mockups

I sketch out a few different ideas I have and see how well they work on paper.

I break my sketch down into sections and choose to start with the Anakin Skywalker portrait. I upload the photo that I have into illustrator and create an additional layer over it which is used to trace and form the outline of his face, hair, neck and shoulder.

My inspiration for this typography comes from the opening scrolls of the Star Wars films where the bottom text is largest in comparison to the top text. I noticed this simulates depth. The font itself is bold and I had a play on colors to distinguish Anakin’s transition from the light side (blue) to the dark side (red).

Put it all together and this is what we have!
